knitonthenet 10: The Comfort Issue

The latest issue of knitonthenet is now available online featuring some really great patterns, articles and reviews.

There are patterns for staving off the winter chills (which we are definitely still having here in Britain), and ones to take you on into the springtime with the amazing Flag cardigan, seen here on the left by Helene Magnusson.

There's a fascinating interview with indie dyer, Babylonglegs, we review Woolly Wormhead's new book Twisted Woolly Toppers and Rachael Matthews from Prick Your Finger tells us about her latest installation.

As well as all of this there is an exciting book give-away, all the latest news on Make, Do and Knit (which is less than a week away!) and we have a new-look front cover which should make it easier for you to navigate the magazine.

Wrapped up

I have a confession.
I had meant to write you a post earlier this week with ideas for things that you could knit up fairly quickly for Mothering Sunday... But, you know, stuff happened - I worked more than usual and then got completely lost in the unpacking from my recent house move. All of a sudden it was Mother's Day and I hadn't got around to writing anything.
I do apologise.

...but I'm sure you got her present sorted. Didn't you?

Instead, here is a little bit of knitting art which I came accross via my friend @lisendral on Twitter. It's a clever and fun advert from a Belgian energy company. What better way to visualise the power of natural gas keeping things warm than by wrapping them in knitting?



What's even better than that is that there is a 'how we did it' video too. Enjoy!

Unravelling

Susan, Gavin and I had a brilliant time at the Unravel event in Farnham, Surrey this past weekend. Susan gave two great talks at the event about Fashion in the Ration which were attended to full capacity and we caught up with friends, old and new. It is always good to meet our readers in person and say hello: you're a lovely bunch! Here are some photographs, if you missed it.

Pillbox Hats

A pillbox hat is a small woman's hat with a flat crown and straight, upright sides. This style was very popular in the 1940s and was often worn with a veil. Historically they have been used as part of women's military uniform, but were popularised by the US First Lady, Jackie Kennedy in the 1960s. More recently, Carla Bruni, the First Lady of France has also been seen wearing a pillbox hat.

JustcallmeRuby's Pillbox Hat, from knitonthenet Issue 2 is a striking example of this style, which instead of being constructed from a frame and fabrics, is knitted and crocheted. Made in double knitting weight wool, is a great project to show off some vintage buttons on the side flaps.

knitonthenet reader Amy from Leicester made this lovely purple version as her Christmas hat. Using a 'mystery yarn' and some matching chenille for the side-flaps, she made her hat in just three days.

Ravelry user, Loveable created a grey version of the Pillbox Hat and used a great button which gives echoes of the military look.
